Basking cactus on a French balcony
Holiday dress fluttering to the rhythm of car engines
Flying kiss, zooming cars
And a bouncy little wiener dog in tweed skipping by

Thrown away gift wrappers
Hunched beside three-month old coffee cup
Cardboard feelings, glazed eyes
And a rattling metro under the influence of impatient footsteps

Fluorescent white on indifferent faces
Common courtesy flashed sporadically in mechanical gestures
Scrolling thumbs, automatic doors
And a united silence stretching towards the clouds

Painting by Camille Pissarro, "Boulevard Montmartre: Night Effect", 1897.
