This photo portrays an audience member at a Drag brunch in San Francisco while a Drag Queen performs and onlookers hold out money. The Drag queen in the photo exposes their entire back for the audience's enjoyment, but their eyes are cut off by the frame, thereby signifying an objectification of the person performing. A dollar bill in the foreground represents the transaction between the person providing the service and the audience. Drag brunches are a popular activity for birthdays, bachelorette parties, and graduations, and they provide two types of service: entertainment and food.
Nina Parker is an artist based in Oakland, California. She is obsessed with figuring out why people have certain habits or treat others in various ways. Parker uses film photography to document people and their actions, from eating and having pets to just surviving in the world. Parker observes mundane moments in the day, and she focuses on using humor to offer a critical perspective on the weirdness of the quotidian. Most of the photographs Parker takes are either portraits or photographs that involve people, for there is much to uncover and analyze about who we are and why we act. Parker’s art is intimate, intense, and feminine. Parker believes every moment of life is significant and worthy of documentation.
