DISORIENTED

“Disoriented” is a piece of tension.

Contorted models in and on garish colours. Distorted jump cuts with minimalistic choreography, plump lips and lifeless eyes. Everything is at odds with each other in delectable opposites, yet still sufficiently tasteful to avoid gaudiness.

There are many narratives to be extracted, but the commentary on social media fashion was particularly pertinent to the Excel issue.

Photography and film graduated from black and white into a world of colour to approximate life. Cameras got better, and life looked better, until the saturation grew richer than our eyes could handle. In the race to best approximate life, we drained life from our subjects, and placed them on untouchable pedestals.

“Disoriented” brings this irony to full view, and we watch as gorgeous models get cast to one side as brightly coloured toys.
